Adventures in Learning

Several years ago, I was recruited by an ex-colleague to teach a music class at Pitt’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. It was called The Soul of Pittsburgh, exposing students to the browner music scene of the city.

Next week, I travel to Indiana University of Pennsylvania to lecture media students. Professor Zack Stiegler, who extended an offer to air The Soul Show on WIUP in ’22, has become a steady friend and supporter. I, in turn, do what’s possible to support his interests.

Here are the topics, roughly:

  • How I got into radio, and some of my background
  • Sharing and reflecting on my experience of branding and marketing The Soul Show to the syndicated market ….processes, tactics, approaches, etc. – how I made the show stand out in the ocean of options available to programmers, challenges in navigating and maintaining that, etc.
  • Development and refinement of show concept
  • Programming tips
  • Production in studio and in an independent environment

…and rightfully so! As a listener to the Soul Show for years, witnessing your travails and triumphs has been my musical pleasure. Congratulations to you,
