Several weeks ago, Pittsburgh Business Times published a profile on The Soul Show and me. It was really gratifying to be asked. I was sent a set of questions in advance of the article, one essentially asking why I thought I was positioned for syndicated growth.
This was my written answer…..
There are some specific events that support what I’m about to say:
While I was live-broadcasting at WYEP, I received two really gratifying calls. One was from jazz great Geri Allen, who had recently moved to Pittsburgh to head the Pitt jazz program. She just wanted to let me know how much she enjoyed The Soul Show. The other call was from saxophonist Eric Kloss, offering similar comments.
Separately, after signing off one evening, a WYEP board member who was attending a meeting came bounding to the on-air studio to intercept me. He said he wanted to meet The Professor.
In 2015, a new station engineer who had come from Clear Channel pulled me aside to say that he loved TSS’ content and that it needed to go national. That inspiration, along with the technical guidance to initiate home production, were the major nudges to get started.
This year, a TSS carrier invited me to apply for their Music Director position.
So, I think The Soul Show’s expansion is due to its curation, its informational narrative and its high production quality.
That you would open the BHM 2-6-25 show with a local band, and seal that same hour with classic Hendrix is only one example of how comprehensive your weekly Soul Show playlists are. By presenting so much thought, information, and variety in those playlists, as well as live interviews,
The Soul Show is a Pittsburgh radio broadcast gem!
National syndication of the show is a no-brainer. Keep up the great approach to giving the people music they want!
thx, ryb!
Your story is one of PERSEVERANCE. Well Done, Mikey!
