After DDB’s performance, I planned to go backstage to meet her, but Bilal was starting up momentarily. I wanted to tell her that one of my first experiences in “serious” music was as an adolescent or young teen, when she accompanied Cannonball Adderley and brother Nat to Island Center in St. Croix, Virgin Islands.
After hearing her heavy set in Pgh over 50 years later, I am inspired to do one of my own on The Soul Show on WZUM The Pittsburgh Jazz Channel this week.
