soulBlog: Noel Quintana and Stanley Clarke at PIJF; West Coast Get Down at wtjx.org; Pittsburgh new music; new Pittsburgh R&B radio

Noel Quintana and Stanley Clarke at PIJF

As always, Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival provided a solid Latin vibe. Noel Quintana, w/special guest Ray Vega of the South Bronx as well as Hugo Cruz, went wayyy over the allotted time slot. Nobody complained 🙂

Stanley Clarke wrapped up the festival with a fine band that included Cameron Graves on keys. Graves co-founded the Young Jazz Giants with West Coast players Kamasi Washington, Thundercat and Ron Bruner, Jr.

‘West Coast Get Down’ special on The Soul Show’s WTJX edition

Cameron Graves with Stanley Clarke, PIJF 2019

A special that I’ve been thinking about for quite a while: a feature on the musicians in the jazz/hiphop/fusion movement in Cali known as the West Coast Get Down. If you were at Stanley Clarke’s PIJF concert on 6/23/19, you might have heard him mention it when he introduced his keyboardist Cameron Graves. Its members include Kamasi Washington, Graves, ThundercatKendrick Lamar and others. This is a level of programming effort I usually reserve for the “big brother” WYEP program, but it’s time to take WTJX up a notch. Besides, Pittsburgh can stream at wtjx.org or listen on demand at soulshowmike.org.

The Soul Show on WTJX.org, Saturday 7/6/19 at 7pm Eastern: The West Coast Get Down

Pittsburgh New Music

On The Soul Show on WYEP, the “Three Rivers at Three” segment is devoted to Pittsburgh artists. Here is some of what’s coming in the next few shows:

  • Gene Stovall (he’s living in Germany these days)
  • Clara Kent
  • Chillent (live album)
  • Shanyse Strickland (with an EP release party on 7/11/19)
  • Glenn Strother

soulBlog: PIJF Reflections, PIJF Vids, Shows of Note for this week

PJIF Reflections, PJIF Vids

In addition to having another great Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, it should be noted that the combined TRAF/PIJF “season” was the best in recent years, if diversity is a yardstick. The City Paper article below sums up why brown music lovers had begun to look past Three Rivers Arts Festival toward PIJF.

https://www.pghcitypaper.com/pittsburgh/why-we-get-who-we-get-at-the-arts-festival/Content?oid=1756051&fbclid=IwAR3N5tmkbqDeUTzEAjCqVm-JZ3oOCj9y1PyFc-HippbkIoI3igRVC7hKiIU

With India Arie, Tank & the Bangas, and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe at TRAF 2019, though, we had a tasty appetizer while waiting for the big meal. The PJIF big meal was huge, this year starting on a Thursday evening with Makaya McCraven’s set in the August Wilson Center informal “Wall of Sound” format:

Here is some Friday afternoon footage of Butcher Brown with Sean Jones guesting, Roger Humphries’ Art Blakey Tribute, Wolf Trap and Keyon Harrold:

From the proto-funk trio Labelle, its two biggest stars were in town for separate shows: Patti in a solo performance (she was at an Afro American Music Institute event earlier in the week), and Nona Hendryx in Black Women Rock, a tribute to Pittsburgh’s Betty Davis.

More PJIF to come in the next soulBlog edition.
